SLJ Week 1 Acticity 10

LI: To write our own summer themed haiku

Today's challenge was to write our own haiku our theme was summer since it is the them for the Summer Learning Journey. A haiku is a type of poetry that has three lines in it that make it a haiku  the structure of the Haiku is 5-7-5 because the first line must have only 5 syllables and second line should only have 7 syllables and the ending line must only have 5 syllables.

The first thing I did was watch a video of how a haiku is structured and then used what I learnt from the video to try and write my own I also looked for examples of summer themed haiku's to get some ideas of what I could write. I had to use this template to create my poem and find an image to match the theme of the poem.

  1. Hi Juel

What a fabulous picture your haiku paints with words. I especially like the last line as it is something I sit on the sand and listen to when I go to the beach. Looking at the picture made me think that we are so lucky in Aotearoa as we have beautiful beaches like this. Which beach do you like going to and why? My favourite beach is Hot Water Beach because its always so much fun digging our own hot pools to relax in and listen to the 'sounds of the waves shift'. If you don't mind I would love to use your haiku poem as an exemplar next year. Keep up the great work!

  2. Hello Mrs Anderson,

Thank you very much for commenting on my blog post and for complementing my haiku I am very thankful for it. One beach that I like going to is a beach I went to recently called Mangawhai heads, I enjoyed going there because there where sand dunes that we were able to slide down on and the water was nice and cold. Sure you can use my Haiku as an exemplar for next year I would be happy for you to use my poem.

    Thank you very much!

  3. Good morning Juel

Great to catch up and see your progress on the SLJ.

While Haiku isn't a personal favourite form of poetry, I can appreciate it. You have mastered the structure and created a lovely poem. As always when we write, it is easier and more rewarding to write about what we like and our passions. I agree with you that this is a great beach to visit.

I look forward to seeing more of your journey.

What is something that you like or are passionate about?

Ben here again from the SLJ commenting team.

This is a beautiful poem. You’ve nailed the haiku format and what you haveve written creates an idea in my head of being at the beach with the elements you’ve described. If you too are able to vividly imagine yourself being at the beach then you are very talented. I hope you foster that imagination of yours and keep writing poems and other works of creativity and imagination.

Keep up the great work Juel!

    Mā te wā,

    Benjamin

    2. Hey Juel.

I hope your Christmas was nice. I don't have a favourite type of poetry because I never read poetry haha. I should read some though, my friends do and they seem to really enjoy it.
I've written some poetry, come to think of it. I wrote a poem once a day for a week for my partners birthday. She really appreciated that.

      All the best,
      Ben
